Parsing Arguments of Nominalizations in English and Chinese

چکیده
In this paper, we use a machine learning framework for semantic argument parsing, and apply it to the task of parsing arguments of eventive nominalizations in the FrameNet database. We create a baseline system using a subset of features introduced by Gildea and Jurafsky (2002), which are directly applicable to nominal predicates. We then investigate new features which are designed to capture the novelties in nominal argument structure and show a significant performance improvement using these new features. We also investigate the parsing performance of nominalizations in Chinese and compare the salience of the features for the two languages.

Annotating the Predicate-Argument Structure of Chinese Nominalizations
This paper describes the Chinese NomBank Project, the goal of which is to annotate the predicate-argument structure of nominalized predicates in Chinese. The Chinese Nombank extends the general framework of the English and Chinese Proposition Banks to the annotation of nominalized predicates and adds a layer of semantic annotation to the Chinese Treebank. We first outline the scope of the work ...
متن کاملA Corpus-Based Quantitative Study of Nominalizations across Chinese and British Media English
This paper reports on a corpus-based quantitative study of the use of nominalizations across China English and British English in two comparable media corpora. In contrast to previous corpus-based studies of nominalizations, we start by using a syntactic approach and proceed with some methodological innovations incorporating large lexical databases and syntactically annotated corpora. The data ...
متن کاملAnnotation Guidelines for the Chinese Proposition Bank
The purpose of the Chinese PropBank (CPB) project is to add a layer of annotation to the hand-parsed sentences in the Chinese Treebank (CTB) (Xue et al., 2005). This layer of annotation assigns predicatespecific argument labels to the constituents in a parse tree. The arguments of each predicate in the sentence, which are limited to verbs and their nominalizations in the work we report here, re...
متن کاملA Comparative Analysis of Institutional Identities in a Corpus of English and Persian News Interviews
Institutional identity as a concept in CDA is a field of study that deals with the identities that individuals in institutions obtain, one that merits deep research attention. News interviews as institutional instances can be analyzed based on the impersonal structures because interviewees see themselves as part of the institution and they may not take responsibility when they encounter problem...
متن کاملAn improved joint model: POS tagging and dependency parsing
Dependency parsing is a way of syntactic parsing and a natural language that automatically analyzes the dependency structure of sentences, and the input for each sentence creates a dependency graph. Part-Of-Speech (POS) tagging is a prerequisite for dependency parsing. Generally, dependency parsers do the POS tagging task along with dependency parsing in a pipeline mode. Unfortunately, in pipel...
